Overview:
General Research Internships at the Moshe Dayan Center can be part-time or full-time, and are on a volunteer basis. Interns are with us for a period of one to several months. Our offices are open from Sunday through Thursday, 9am to 5pm. The Moshe Dayan Center Research Library, where interns will conduct their research, is open on Sunday & Monday from 8:30 - 14:30, and Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 8:30 - 18:30, year-round, except for national holidays. To learn more about our library, click on this link.
An internship with the Moshe Dayan Center provides a unique experience to work intimately with a group of world-renowned scholars and experts in Middle Eastern and African Studies. Customarily, our interns arrive at the Center with a particular research project in mind. Thus, prior to arrival, interns are encouraged to read the bios of our experts and to find a Research Fellow whose specialization coincides with the interests of the intern.
Once you have decided on a project and an adviser, please send an introductory e-mail to dayancen@post.tau.ac.il. In the subject please type INTERNSHIP and your name. (Your query will be directed to the appropriate member of our staff.) In the body of the e-mail, please include the proposed dates of your internship, as well as the name of the Research Fellow with whom you would like to work. Please attach to the e-mail a one-page research proposal, and an up-to-date C.V., in two separate Word documents. The Moshe Dayan Center staff will verify that the requested Research Fellow is able to oversee your project. You will receive a response to your application within one month's time of receipt.
The Moshe Dayan Center is home to one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of modern and contemporary Arabic-language newspapers in the world. The Arabic Press Archives of the Moshe Dayan Center at Tel Aviv University continues to expand, in both digital and hard copy formats. Interns have full access to the Archives and are welcome to glean sources from it, free of charge. On the other hand, we expect interns to assist in the daily activities of the Arabic Archives for a limited amount of time during their internship, in addition to their research project.
Furthermore, as part of the ongoing activities of the Moshe Dayan Center, interns can choose or be delegated to work on one of our multimedia projects. These include the audiovisual library, our monthly podcast Diwaniyya, and our cultural blog Zawiyya. We may ask you to provide assistance or input in one or more of these projects during you internship period.
In addition to research and the other projects listed above, interns are invited to conferences, seminars, and movie and lecture series hosted by the Center throughout the academic year. Please visit our Programs link to learn more about our activities.
Interns may also be asked to contribute an academic article to Tel Aviv Notes, a bi-monthly online publication of the Moshe Dayan Center, which provides insight and analysis on current affairs and broader developments in the region. At the same time, interns at graduate student level may submit articles for publication in our peer-reviewed academic journal Sharqiyya, which is published semi-annually.
Internships with the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies are unpaid. However, if the intern has a financial sponsor, the Center will be happy to issue an official letter of invitation to the intern or the sponsor, as specified by the applicant.
