This volume, "The Middle East in Turbulent Times", is dedicated to Prof. Itamar Rabinovich in celebration of his 80th birthday. Prof. Rabinovich has been a foundational figure in modern Middle Eastern studies at Tel Aviv University. For over a generation, he has led the field in research and teaching, serving as chair of the Department of Middle Eastern History (1976) and as Director of the Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies (1983). Professor Rabinovich elevated Middle Eastern studies to a prominent position within Tel Aviv University’s research landscape and transformed the Dayan Center under his leadership into a globally recognized academic and research institution. His reputation as an esteemed scholar and lecturer extends far beyond Israel, making him highly sought-after in academic circles worldwide. Through these accomplishments, he significantly advanced the university’s international standing. His exceptional administrative and leadership abilities were evident throughout his career, leading to his appointments as Dean of the Faculty of Humanities (1989) and later as Rector of the University. In 1998, he was elected the sixth President of Tel Aviv University, a role he held for two terms until 2007. Prof. Rabinovich’s remarkable and varied contributions have made him a source of inspiration for many students and researchers of the modern Middle East. His influence extends beyond academia, with numerous students and successors holding prominent roles in academic institutions in Israel and globally, as well as serving in key positions within the Israeli public sphere. His approach has shaped the study of the modern Middle East, presenting it not only as an engaging and intellectually stimulating field but also as an essential discipline that offers valuable insights for navigating Israel’s future on regional and international fronts.
הקובץ "המזרח התיכון בסערת העתים" מוקדש לפרופ' איתמר רבינוביץ' בהגיעו לגבורות. פרופ' רבינוביץ', איש רב פעלים, הנו אחד מעמודי התווך של לימודי המזרח התיכון בעת החדשה באוניברסיטת תל אביב ובמשך שנות דור ניצב בראש מערכי המחקר וההוראה בתחום, כראש החוג להסטוריה של המזרח התיכון (1976) וראש מרכז משה דיין לחקר המזרח התיכון ואפריקה (1983). פרופ' רבינוביץ' העמיד את לימודי המזרח התיכון בחזית המחקר של אוניברסיטת תל אביב והפך את מרכז דיין שבראשו עמד לראש חץ אקדמי ומחקרי ברמה הבינלאומית. שמו של פרופ' רבינוביץ' הלך לפניו והוא הפך לחוקר ומרצה מבוקש ברחבי העולם האקדמי, ובפעילותו זו פילס דרך חשובה ומכוננת בעבור אוניברסיטת תל אביב. כישוריו הניהוליים והמנהיגותיים בלטו לאורך כל הדרך, ולא בכדי הפך לדקאן הפקולטה למדעי הרוח (1989), רקטור האוניברסיטה ובשנת 1998 נבחר לכהן כנשיאה השישי של אוניברסיטת תל אביב, תפקיד בו שימש שתי כהונות עד שנת 2007. רבים ממאמרי הקובץ שלפנינו משיקים לתחומי ההתמחות והמחקר של פרופ' רבינוביץ', ויש מהם שנבנים על תובנות מכתביו. הקובץ מוגש בהצדעה ובתודה לתרומתו הסגולית הייחודית של איתמר רבינוביץ' ומלווה באיחולי בריאות והמשך עשייה פוריה. לשמחתנו, פרישתו מהעולם האקדמי לא סימלה, ולו לרגע, את סיום דרכו המחקרית. פרופ' רבינוביץ' הנו חוקר פעיל הפוקד את מסדרונות האקדמיה וכתמיד משמש עבורנו מקור איתן לעיצה טובה, אמירה שנונה ותמרור דרך.
