Nationalism, Identity and Politics: Israel and the Middle East, has been written in honor of Professor Asher Susser, a distinguished scholar and a gifted lecturer of modern Middle Eastern history at Tel Aviv University, on the occasion of his retirement. Prof. Susser has been an integral part of the Tel Aviv University community since 1968. Over the decades, he has been a pillar of teaching and research, serving the university with distinction both in Israel and abroad. As head of the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies from 1989–1995, and again between 2001–2007, Prof. Susser was the driving force that enabled the Center to survive the lean years of tight budgets and then to thrive afterwards, greatly expanding the MDC’s audience and spreading its scholarly influence. Asher’s impact was not limited to the Dayan Center, but also felt in the classrooms and hallways of the Department of Middle East History and beyond, where he provided all of us, students and colleagues alike, with his poignant insights and observations. Though he is retiring, he will remain active at the Center as a senior researcher and continue to contribute his knowledge and eloquent voice to the Dayan Center’s mission of explaining and analyzing the complex realities of the Middle East. We at the Moshe Dayan Center have produced this volume as a small token of our appreciation. For his dedication, sacrifice, and scholarship, we profoundly thank him and wish him the very best.
